Reasons to choose La Maddalena

EPISODE 2 - A home at La Maddalena: good reasons to live in this Island

THE HISTORICAL CENTRE

Do you remember what we told you in the previous episode? Sardinia is a wonderful place, the Costa Smeralda is fantastic, and the Archipelago La Maddalena is paradise.

In the first episode of this article, we focused on the naturalistic beauties of this magnificent archipelago: now you will discover that La Maddalena is also much more!

Not just natural beauty, but also an extensive history. On arriving on the island of La Maddalena, you will immediately see how the historical centre still shows signs of a distant past, in which fishing communities lived side by side with important figures.

There are numerous historical sites:

  • The granite column located in Piazza XXIII Febbraio dedicated to Garibaldi, who lived for a long period on the island, erected on the first centenary of the hero of the two worlds’ birth.
  • The remains of the Batteria Balbiano military fort, which was built between 1790 and 1792, are located in the vicinity of Cala Gavetta. From this point, it was possible to observe the channel between the islands of La Maddalena and Santo Stefano and defend the island.
  • The Municipal Palace in Piazza Garibaldi contains a tombstone that reproduces the letter written by Garibaldi in 1849 to the mayor of La Maddalena. The Palace also hosts one of the Napoleonic bombs that struck the city in 1793, as well as items belonging to Garibaldi.
  • Piazza Umberto I is the location of the monument to Fallen Sailors and the elegant Palazzo dell’Ammiragliato della Marina Militare, which was built at the end of the 19th century

Long rows of palm trees that sway in the wind, the scent of the sea that enhances every possible emotion La Maddalena enchants for both its views of the sea and its characteristic lanes. The old centre is delightful, and we recommend taking relaxing evening strolls through the bustling streets full of bars, restaurants and shops.

Of particular interest is a visit to the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, which holds one of the most precious treasures; a crucifix donated by Admiral Nelson in 1804.

As you can see, it is impossible to be bored in La Maddalena.

Every season offers a range of opportunities to enjoy its beauty.

Another great advantage of owning a home on this splendid island is the fact that it is inhabited all year round. Shops, bars, restaurants, pharmacies, sports centres and all the other services are open 365 days a year.
